This project boldly subverts the beauty industry's widely promoted myth that, to enhance their beauty, women should apply eye makeup and shape their eyebrows in specific ways based on their facial shape. The promotion of this myth, designed to increase the commercialisation and profits of the beauty industry, is perpetuated through advertising, social media, beauty influencers and women's adherence to the male gaze. In this project, Vicky Hodgson covers her face with a paper bag mask and uses its generic shape and geometric shapes to ask which shape suits her best. Her unique, uncanny and humorous challenge to these norms is not just art; it is a powerful catalyst for deep societal reflection. With the potential to reshape the audience's perceptions of beauty, her work invites them to question this absurd beauty standard that subordinates women to patriarchal myths and consumerism. It offers hope that society is ready to engage in a debate about this beauty culture and is on the cusp of new thinking.
